STRANGE MAGIC – Review / Interview with cast and George Lucas!

STRANGE MAGIC

Ugly can be beautiful.

It’s human nature to fear something we don’t understand. Based on appearance alone, taking things at “face value” sometimes has its downfalls. Often times we’ve been told never judge a book by its cover. Whether or not we put such powerful metaphor to work depends on the individual. However, truth be told, most often than not things aren’t always what they seem. Quick judgment leads to regret based on truth unveiling itself. Whether films, books, or personal experiences, sometimes in different ways we’re all the same. With a little knowledge of what and/or whom we’re taking our time with, fear or perhaps assumptions ease up and what we least expect from it and/or them winds up a pleasurable, surprising outcome. Perhaps one that may even go as far as love!

As its theme, “Strange Magic” is a new animated feature from Lucasfilm Ltd. Amusingly eccentric, it’s a fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Popular tunes from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful love potion.

At first glance “Strange Magic” seems to come off creepy, odd, and ugly. Living up to its title though, the feature is strange, but magical with its hidden beauty of acceptance and complex, yet positive interaction(s). Although hard to adjust to all of its qualities and characteristics as a whole, it’s quite a unique experience full of interesting animation, vibrant characters, and lots of cinematic harmony. Moving along with its familiar tracks as they’re preformed to help tell the story, the soundtrack’s diverse and adds to the charm that cuts between worlds full of freakish-looking oddities blanketed by blissful tones.

Not your usual result when hearing the name George Lucas, but considering his “strange mind” (as he so eloquently states), it’s not really much of a surprise something along the lines of “Strange Magic” would erupt. Providing enough colorful characters and goofy gags to keep the kiddies entertained, there’s enough subject-matter that can be absorbed and enjoyed by adults, who in turn, may explain the positives of its plot once done and on their way home.

Once again, Mickey’s crew allowed me some time to get a little close-and-personal with some of those who made “Strange Magic” what it is, including Executive Producer, George Lucas.

Enjoy…
