Jungle Book Adventures | THE LOST CITY – Review

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum star in THE LOST CITY | (C) Paramount Pictures 2022

Forced treasure hunt with twists, turns, and comedic torment!

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the brighter, comedic side of Sandra Bullock. It was interesting to see her being swept away by GRAVITY, locked in a BIRD BOX, dabbling in Guatemala’s elections in OUR BRAND IS CRISES, or a sweet-talking shoplifter who helps brainstorm a heist in OCEAN’S EIGHT; however, let us not forget she was once a gem who dominated the comedy scene back in the day — and oh, how sweet it is to see her back on the silly, slapstick, comedy scene courtesy of THE LOST CITY.

It’s all about sliding, slipping, and dipping in this one. THE LOST CITY follows author Loretta Sage (Bullock) who writes about exotic places in her popular adventure novels that feature a handsome, Fabio-like, cover model named Alan aka “Dash” (Tatum). While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Radcliffe) who hopes she can lead him to an ancient city’s lost treasure from her latest story. Determined to prove he can be a hero in real life and not just on the pages of her books, Alan sets off to rescue her. But like any rescue, it’s easier said than done.

THE LOST CITY isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it’s fun, cute, funny, entertaining, and adventurously engaging. Considering everything it exposed, it’s a mishmash between Romancing The Stone and Indiana Jones, sprinkled with a little of The Rundown. Its plesantry comes in the form of Sandra Bullock. She’s back! There’s something about her that just adds a level of charm to anything she’s in. She’s unique and versatile. Her riff-raff and runarounds with Channing Tatum were pretty good and both are so adored by the camera, it’s not hard to keep watching. Not the best chemistry, but good enough to allow the film to stay afloat, which in part also comes from the script, which also leveled the playing field with Radcliffe as a witty, charismatic villain and Pitt, in a short, but hilarious role. Overall, it’s a feel-good, pop-corn comedy with silly twists and turns.
