Audiences around the world were mesmerized by Disney’s live-action classic adventure “The Jungle Book,” directed by Jon Favreau. Visually delicious, this gem of a film held our imagination hostage. With engaging characters voiced by some of Hollywood’s heavy-hitters, but its one-and-only on-screen lead, newcomer Neel Sethi (about 10 at the time) as Mowgli, held his own and defined exactly what it is to endure Disney at its best.
Vibrant and charismatic throughout the film’s run, Neel Sethi is an up-and-coming star. Released on Tuesday, August 30th on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, relive the adventure as you dive deeper into the film with behind the scenes bonus features that expose filmmaking technology used to create the immersive jungle and characters. Followed by Neel Sethi’s journey, a humorous scene-by-scene audio commentary with director Jon Favreau and the all-star voice cast who helped bring the film’s pizzazz to life.
Having been granted a quick chat with Neel Sethi (now 12), as soon as we got into it… I understood why this bright kid was chosen. His confidence oozed through my speaker and made things clear before we started by informing me his last name is spelled with a T H I at the end, but pronounced as if it ended with a D and double E – meaning “Sedee,” ladies and gentlemen. Not “Sethi.” Get it? Got it? Good!
Getting right to it, my curiosity about him landing the role was the first thing I hit him with. As expected, with that same confidence, “It’s you, Neel,” he expresses when mentioning about the role being brought to his attention. “Ok, I’ll try it out. I did it and they liked it,” making it seem as if it’s that easy to book things in Tinsel Town.
Apparently for him it was. No fear. “It didn’t faze me at all. I did what I normally do.” Having auditioned at ABC Studios in NYC, “It was really fun.” This all clearly translates on film when watching it. The Blu-ray provides audition footage with Neel of which I had the privilege of watching and it’s amazing to see this kid just own it. I really recommend it.
From auditioning, to his time on set, and his meeting with Bill Murray where they ate lobster and played football, my chat with Neel was one of the quickest, but best I’ve ever had. Humble and curious about me once he finds out like him, I too am a native NYer, talking to him was as charming as it was watching him on screen. “I’ve got some things in the works,” he says when I ask if there’s anything coming up for him. He can’t really talk about them. It’s the nature of the beast, but I don’t doubt he’ll have more than some things in the future. I suggested he start wearing shades because he’s got a bright future.
