Mommy dearest

From helicopter, to tiger, and even over-protective, you name it! There’s a type of mom that fits the description. Hell, my own mom pretty much fit all three tags. Growing up in NYC wasn’t a stroll down Strawberry Fields – and my mom took great pride in making sure her three boys wouldn’t turn out wrong. Back then modern technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now, but she always found her ways. Nowadays, it’s way easier for moms to double, or even triple down on the amount of hovering. Granted they care about their offspring, of course. There’s simply an overload of information out there, but nothing has ever solved the one complex problem all moms face: How to get it all done in 24 hours? Without a concise answer, can you blame the occasional mom who just freaks the fuck out?

In BAD MOMS, a new comedy written and directed by the duo behind THE HANGOVER movies, Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis) has a seemingly perfect life: a great marriage, 2 over-achieving kids, a great home and a solid career. However, she’s over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to a point that she’s about to lose her shit. Fed up, she joins forces with 2 other over-stressed moms, Kiki (Kristen Bell) and Carla (Kathryn Hahn), on a unique quest to free themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mommy-like binge of long overdue outings, fun and self-indulgence – placing them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) and her clique of robotic, devoted, perfect moms, Vicky (Anne Mumolo) and Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith).

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. It takes some time to find its footing, but it picks up quite nicely with a rough-around-the-edge appeal. From the start, you know what kind of movie you’re getting. A lot of craziness. Not in a HANGOVER kinda way (not that it should have), but more in terms of paying humorous homage to hard-working mothers and how it all goes to shit when matriarchs go “MIA.” Considering a one-note narrative, it’s Kathryn Hahn’s harsh, comedic display as lead scene-stealer that stands out the most. Aside from that, BAD MOMS provides pretty good one-liners, rowdy scenarios, and side-gags with additional cast members (Jay Hernandez and Wanda Sykes) who add a bit more spice to the flick. Fun watch, it is without doubt these moms are carried mostly by the flick’s edginess. Anything else would have been a complete flat-line.
