Directed by Sebastián Lelio (Academy Award-winning “A Fantastic Woman”), “Disobedience” exposes its audience to Ronit (Rachel Weisz) as she returns to the same community that shunned her years earlier for an attraction to childhood friend, Esti (Rachel McAdams). Upon returning, amidst Ronit’s actual purposes for being around, their passion reignites as they finally explore boundaries of faith and sexuality.
While Lelio (one of Latin-America’s finest directors) may not be reinventing the wheel in terms of a story regarding an outsider who isn’t necessarily welcomed, his style of telling it does have a unique approach. Doing away with anything and everything conventional, the narrative is well-executed through day-to-day dilemmas between Ronit, Esti, and Esti’s husband, played by Alessandro Nivola. Beautifully acted, as drama deepens, the characters smoothly dig themselves within its audience enough to feel and live the film from within. At a run just a little under two hours, “Disobedience” is another powerhouse film that’ll continue to build Lelio’s filmmaking career.
