Cuban singer-songwriter Danay SuÃ¡rez continues impacting the music industry in the states.Â After making her debut at the LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) this past week in New York, she confirmed that she will be part of the Grass Roots Festival‘s stellar lineup this year.
This traditional festival, which celebrates its twenty-fourth anniversary this year, has brought together a wide and diverse range of world-renown artist like George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Patty Loveless, Rusted Root, Ani DiFranco, Los Lobos, Hugh Masekela, Toots and the Maytals, and Tinariwen, to name a few. Â The Grass Roots Festival is known for its eclectic lineups ranging from local talent to traditional musicians from the U.S. and for bringing sounds from various corners of the planet.Â The event will take place July 17th through July 20th in Trumansburg, New York, near Ithaca.
Over 20k spectators will get to witness Danay’s talent first-hand and the magic she projects on stage on Friday, July 18th at 10:15 PM (Local Time).Â Along with Danay, over 70 artists will be part of this year’s festival such as:Â Donna the Buffalo, Lake Street Dive, Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Locos Por Juana, Anders Osborne, Red Baraat, Conjunto Chappottin, Afrobeta, and Lanzallamas, among many more.
An unprecedented voice coming out of Cuba, marked by sophistication and innovation that navigates through Hip-Hop, Jazz, Reggae, and other sounds…Danay has become one of the most promising international artists in the Latin music industry today.
Danay SuÃ¡rez, was born in Havana, Cuba in 1984. Where as her application to Cuba’s musical conservatory was denied, she never gave up on her dream. Danay joined “Opera de la Calle” in 2003 which allowed her to train and furter expand her sound spectrum. She later went on to become one of the principal figures in Cuba’s underground Rap movement. Danay’s ability to adapt has allowed her to thrive in different genres such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Dub-Step and traditional Cuban music. Her collaborations as a Havana Cultura solo artist took her to international stages and between 2009 – 2012 participated in shows in Paris, Manchester, London, Amsterdam, Turkey and Leeds. In 2013 she headlined Colombia’s famed festival “Hip-Hop al Parque” where she sang before an audience of 120,000 fans. She has shared the stage and collaborated with Omara Portuondo, Roberto Fonseca, Robert Glasper, Gilles Peterson, X-Alfonso, Raul Paz, DJ Mala, Roberto Carcase and Interactivo. Danay is currently working on her much anticipated album “Palabras Manuales” which will be released through Universal Music in 2014.
