The same powers Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) feared were too much for the world to handle in FROZEN, are the same powers she hopes are enough in FROZEN 2.

In 2013, FROZEN introduced the world to Elsa. A unique princess with a gift. The gift of creating ice and snow. Riddled with complexities, she works her way through it and lived happily ever after. In FROZEN 2, the day after happily ever after, she’s learned how to control her magic, and recently opened up about it a bit more to her kingdom. So, no matter how happy Elsa is to embrace her powers and be with her sister, Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), their friends, and the people of Arendelle, she still finds herself uneased.

Now… Elsa hears a voice calling. A voice no one else can hear. She tries blocking it out, but it won’t stop. Seeking answers, Elsa decides to follow the calling voice, leading to an unknown journey of unsettling mysteries, and answers beyond her expectation. Determined to be by her sister’s side, Anna—along with Kristoff, Olaf and Sven—join the voyage to help uncover the call.

For starters, I need to get this off my chest, that vocal note call in the film constantly loops in my head since screening the film. It isn’t bad, or good, or even strange, it’s just another example of how powerful The House of Mouse is when it comes to engraving their product in your brain. (At least mine.)

Can lightning strike twice? Maybe. Not as strong, but it can. The first FROZEN is a gorgeously animated, well-written film, loaded with singalong songs. Making it another strong entry among Disney’s resume, was a sequel needed? No. but it’s a trend that’ll last for a long time as long as these films do well.

That said, truth is, FROZEN 2 works. It complements the first. The awe-shocking appeal of something new isn’t there, because we’ve seen these characters before. However, the allure and intrigue is still there right when its opening scene beautifully jumps off the screen running parallel with cute, catchy dialog to set the pace for its next journey.

FROZEN 2 is a rare sequel with an it-factor. The premise is twice as deep, twice as adventurous, twice as thrilling, twice as intense, and the songs… twice as catchy! (Parents beware!) It’s a fascinating story adding to the world of FROZEN and making 2 unique and a bit better in its own way. While the narrative is darker and a lot more mature, it’s still an excellent piece for families. (Olaf makes sure of that!)

The first remains my favorite, but I must say I enjoyed this film a lot more than I expected. Solidifying its place considering its strong predecessor, I can bet FROZEN 2 doesn’t end the franchise. Make sure you keep your butts frozen right in your seats as there’s an interesting post-credit scene. That said, bundle up and enjoy the ride.
