Throughout the years, Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson has yelled out on many occasions for others to “know their role!†And much to his credit, he’s surely known his because if there’s anything any of us can attest to is he’s become the star we all heard he set out to be. Knowing HIS role has led to some of his most memorable cinematic moments. Sure, it didn’t start out that way because let’s face it…when we reluctantly endured 2006’s THE TOOTH FAIRY or 2007’s THE GAME PLAN, I don’t think any of us were too sure he knew HIS roles and/or where he was headed. It doesn’t stop there; remember 2009’s RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, 2010’s FASTER or better yet…2007’s mildly obscure SOUTHLAND TALES? (Yea, I know, I had totally forgotten about those, too.) Whether he was paying Hollywood dues or not, it didn’t really start out as if he’d have a promising film career, but apparently he and his people knew what they were doing. While not the most memorable, he generated a NEW following – proving he CAN sell tickets at the box office. Transitioning from ring to silver screen wasn’t something that could be considered easy. Seriously, ask “Suburban Commando” if you ever come face-to-face with him. “The Rock†had a following, but it takes more than just a bunch of loud kids/women or beer-belly, wacko wrestling fans to secure box office mullah! Oh no…the idea from the start was to secure another kind of following. A following that would place smiles on a general, all-around public as well as generate money for others instead of Vince McMahon…
He did it and kudos to “The Rock†for proving a lot of non-believers wrong. Honestly, IT DOESN’T MATTER if he stars or costars… The power he generated globally raised eye-brows and so started the offers into franchises that were dying out. FAST & FURIOUS as well as G.I. JOE were franchises that where going through the motions. There was an established following, but I dare any of the studios or fans of these franchises to say that bringing in Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson didn’t push these films to higher levels. (I’ll wait… Yeah, that’s what I thought!) Anyway, with solid turnouts at advance screenings and ticket sales, Dwayne (and I use that name very loosely) has solidified himself as one of today’s biggest, badass Hollywood stars.
That said, in anticipation to this week’s release of HERCULES, I’d like to share some of the best roles he’s played.
One of my personal favorites is “Doyle†from PAIN & GAIN. What’s yours?
