Recap: World Humanitarian Day 2016 at The United Nations 2016

On August 19, 2016, I had the pleasure of attending the annual World Humanitarian Day at the U.N. headquarters. It was a worldwide event that honored humanitarian workers who stood on the front lines of war and other disasters to aid civilians. These humanitarians risked their lives while encountering danger among war zones/challenges to lead a cause. Several of these nations are suffering by the hands of their government and do not have a voice to fight for their rights. It is our responsibility as people to be united and stand together.

One humanity was this year’s theme and it highlighted the crises across the globe . Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Jenks was the emcee of the evening and he is widely known for his MTV show World of Jenks. The evening was filled with mixed emotions as we heard traumatic, but heroic stories from Syrian refugee and speaker Hala Kamil; and Lebanese International film/TV actress Yasmine Al Massri (ABC’s Quantico). Palestinian musician Mohammed Assaf was brought on stage with Yasmine and performed an original song. Alisan Porter (NBC’s The Voice S10 winner) performed two songs which were dedicated to her two children and mothers across the world. Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr. and the Harlem Gospel Choir were outstanding as the final acts. Keynote speaker and Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie and English actress Natalie Dormer delivered powerful speeches as they discussed equality and other issues that are ignored by society.

Here is our photo recap of the World Humanitarian Day event that was held at The United Nations on Friday August 19, 2016.
