"Interview with Latino Celebrity Barber Marcos “Reggae” Smith"

CL: At this point in your career what motivates you to do what you do?

Reggae: Experiencing new things that take my talents outside the barbershop. I also love interacting with new people and seeing new places. Last year, I had the opportunity to visit Chile for the first time with Jason Derulo for his commercial with the World Cup. It was an amazing experience and I had never been to South America before that.

CL: I love the fact that you still work at the local barbershop where you started years ago. How important is community to you?

Reggae: Very important! It keeps me grounded and reminds me of my roots. It also serves as a vehicle to keep a pulse on the new, young culture. Being in the shop keeps my skills refined and I’m always growing because of the volume and variety of hair and styles I cut on a day-to-day basis.

CL: You have gone across the globe and your brand is elite. What advice would you give a young girl or boy on trying to find their way in life?

Reggae: I think you have to stay consistent. Keep growing, keep evolving and don’t deter from your goals. Success lies in longevity, persistence, and professionalism which are simple keys to finding your way in life. I also cannot say it enough – networking is so important. Building authentic and valued relationships will propel you to success.

CL: I know that you probably get some cool perks from cutting hair for stars like Will Smith and Kyrie Irving just to name a few. What was the craziest gift anyone that you have cut hair for has given you?

Reggae: The opportunity to travel. I’ve been to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Chile, Toronto and many different states. I also just got an Xbox with like 30 games so that’s fun and sometimes I get offered some pretty nice seats at Knicks games.

CL: So Summer is approaching and me personally, I love the Messy Look Matte Wax by Axe. Can you give us a few essential summer grooming tips for guys?

Reggae: I love it, too.

  1. Tip #1 For those with full beards, when altering your beard in the summer time be aware that the skin under your beard has not been exposed to the sun, so if you do switch up the shape of your beard, be prepared for the tan lines
  2. Tip #2 The summer brings long beach and pool days, so make sure to wash your hair every day or at least every other day to combat impurities that may damage your hair like chlorine, salt water and sweat. These may mask the texture of your hair and make it tough to style. I’d recommend using AXE Gold Wash & Style Shampoo because I love the way it preps your hair with or without product
  3. Tip #3 For those looking for low maintenance hairstyles, I recommend going short. Just make sure to pay your barber a visit at least every two weeks for a touch up
  4. Tip #4 For those that are looking to have some more texture in their hair this summer, I recommend using the AXE Messy Look Matte Wax. It’s easy to use for all hair types and provides texture with no shine. Also a fun fact: 7 out of 10 guys preferred the Matte Wax over American Crew Fiber
